Having Holly stay was great, we had so much fun here including our tea parties with scones and mcvities (guess ya had to be there lol)

the workshop we had with Miss Kim was just incredible. We learnt some fantastic new technique exercises and the class was so joyous and the atmosphere and level of energy was great!

how did we find the energy to go out... EVERYNIGHT!!!

anyhow, basically... I know a couple of people from LIPA and UARTS are on myspace so I thought I'd set up a myspace group too... i've already added those who are on my friends list. We were all trying to hide from it, trying to forget it, hoping it wouldn't come... but of course it did. The guys have left us to return back to their home ground. We are currently in the process of planning a "recovery mission" to return them all back to LIPA but the obstacles are great and the time is fast running out. If anyone has a transporter machine [of the large variety] please do not hesitate to email ASAP.

Seriously though, that was one hell of an emotional goodbye! We certainly didn't want everyone to leave. Tears in the canteen afterwards and fond discussions of the past week.

Firstly, can I just say that I had possibly the most AMAZING bunch of fellows staying with me. Paul, Phil, Mike, Charlie I love you all so much. Hearts of gold and humors of platinum, words cannot express how amazing my week has been! Mikey Mahoney, Jay, Edwin, Ross, Bob, JP... high fives. Going to miss you all like crazy but I'm going to hunt you down as soon as possible! UArts are very lucky to have such a wonderful group of people. UArts students rule.

Top Memories:
- Oregano, basil, herbs, aluminum, water... you guys need to learn how to say those words properly!
- Phil eating chili with his hands
- Phil getting up in the morning to clean our kitchen
- Phil and Mahoneys dancing... the crab
- Quoting bill and Ted on the webcast
- Recovering Vampire and 3rd fist [ask Mahoney and Phil]
- Mike's English accent- SPACE MOUNTAIN [known to Liverpool residents as the Catholic Cathedral]
- "do you want to finish this?... not the bottle!"
- Snow in Liverpool... DEEPish snow. Americans unimpressed with lack of snow plows haha
- Paul providing piggy back over the slush [I should have worn appropriate shoes]
- TOAD-IN-THE-HOLE! at 2am. Its an English dish involving sausages in batter. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out. Fact.
- Taking lovely photos of Jackie and Mike on my phone
- Paul getting Jackie to make phone calls at ridiculous hours in the morning
- Nights out in bar fresa, the flute, bumper, casa, LIPA bar...
- Going to tesco in torrential rain
- Viking hand shakes- topping up drinks so that they NEVER end. Its what all good hosts should do.
- PEANUT BUTTER SMIDGENS! You guys have AWESOME sweets [candy]
- Blow up beds
- Making sure Mahoney arrives at LIPA on time
- Charlie and Paul's sweet new jackets
- Paul's obsession with his Liverpool FC scarf "if only it was a bit longer?!" "does this look good?...how about this?...." so good he brought two...
- Yorkie chocolate [English candy] its not for girls
- hahahahaha crazy shopping spree in Quiggins [known to the boys as Quiglys]
- Jay's junk getting grabbed by a random
- "I'm a man" do they ever stop saying that?!
- Mike's new hair cut! cut at 2am
- Paul's press ups [or whatever you call them...]
...There are so many more but I'll just end up rambling

Everyone at LIPA has valued meeting all the UArts students so so so much. We only hope that is wont be too long until we next them again. This has been an unforgettable week, I only wish that'd it had lasted longer. GUYS!!!! Went to the Beatles experience museum on Saturday afternoon ... Pretty much a Beatles 101 crash course ... LIPA was featured prominently in the Paul McCartney solo area with an artistic rendition of the front of the building and accompanying video.

A pair of john lennon's glasses were on display in his solo area ... Many women dressed in tank tops and mini-skirts, but carrying umbrellas because it was snowing ...

as we left the cue for the club, we walked across the one-way street between two cars that were facing each other with about 10-15 cars behind them ... talk about gridlock! perfect illustration of the scene ...

Observations: traffic lights turn yellow as they're about to turn green ... some of the coins have inscriptions on their edges ...

Day 4

(Saturday morning) the nature of the relationship between UArts and LIPA really came into focus for me yesterday... what we're doing here has transcended being about a business relationship ... It's personal ...

a couple of things yesterday helped me come to this conclusion ... Giles Auckland-Lewis, our equivalent of provost, got sort of emotional while addressing the audience after the show yesterday (sorry to dime you out Giles) ...

and so the show yesterday was excellent ... as i mentioned, all of the performers were at the top of their games ... Mike C. and Ross played a couple of original jazz pieces ... edwin spinning while jeannette freestyled ... Paul, Andrea and Charlie's performance of Tongues ... the dancers improving their march up the side aisles and subsequent "dance-off" in front of the stage during Mahoney's African Groove Tune with the buckets and singers ...

then, after the show, I went to dinner at a splendid Indian restaurant near Chinatown with Marc, Justin and Lee Higgins and his wife michelle ... and Marc, Lee and his wife were talking about their kids exchanging emails ... so much more than business and it's really humbling to me to be so involved.

Anyway, we made yesterday's Liverpool Echo ... check out the link ... https://mail.uarts.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/tm_objectid=16798790%2526method=full%2526siteid=50061%2526headline=philadelphia%252dbeat%252d-name_page.html ... i'm quoted way more than I'd like to be ... i'm supposed to be "the guy behind the guy," but what can i do ... at least i don't sound like an ass (at least i don't think i do) ...

yesterday, I found myself speaking with Terry, an acting professor from LIPA ... we got to talking and found out he taught dialects ... so as ethnocentric as I am, I asked him to "do an American" accent ... and he asked me "which one?" ... He couldn't do Philly, but did a mean NYC, Jimmy Carter and Texas accents ... We went on to talk about "BBC English" and the differences between north and south british accents ... how the southern britons speak the "king's english" ... and the Northern britons speak something i might characterize as a bit less pompous sounding ...

Dicciani held a DTX drum clinic for the LIPA drum students ... this DTX kit is crazy ... so many different sounds and samples you can stop and start by tapping any of the pads or rims ... the clinic was scheduled from 12:30-2:30 and at 2:45 it was still going strong ... their drummers were listing to Dicciani so intensely, the clinic could've gone on for another couple of hours, but we had to load in for the show ... turns out Dicciani is going to try to hold another clinic before we leave ...

I got some great video, but my video camera was dying toward the end of the performance and I was running around the balcony trying to find my electrical adapter to plug it in ... finally asked Dan Berlin to borrow his and I was able to get the rest of the show ... at least most of it ... of course after all that, i ran out of tape about halfway through the final song, "a little help from my friends" ...

i'm off to the Beatles museum on Albert Dock ... and then dinner tonight with EVERYONE ... should be great fun ...

Couple of things: Coke tastes like Diet Coke ... British TV sucks ... and we're expecting snow tonight ... still, we're all having an awesome time ...

kevin kaufman (UArts)

UArts - LIPA Showcase broadcast

The broadcast tonight could hardly have gone better. I had to adjust the levels constantly but i got the hang of it. It was two and a half hours of incredible collaboration. Jazz, dance, modern theatre, etc. Technical difficulties were non-existent. There were a good number of listeners back home, especially for spring break. Even one listener from Wisconsin. That's the beauty of web radio. Of course, as the producer of the rasdio program, i have no control over the material - im only glad they did such a good job so that i had something good to broadcast in the first place. The LIPA dancers have really taken to Kim and it comes through in their effort on the floor.

Each group of dancers performed a piece created expressly for the trip ... each spectacular in their own way ... then the bucket drummers came in and the dancers performed the piece they've been working on for these past two days.

Kim's done a great job of infusing some "atty-tood" into the piece ... there are three groups within the piece and they each face off like the jets and sharks in West Side Story ... it's some really aggresive-style dancing. With Dicciani on the DTX drum kit, the energy in the room was off the charts.

Next up was a jazz vocal clinic with Justin, who still doesn't have his voice, so he leaned on Jeanette to be his voice through the session. What a set of pipes on that young lady. and such range and versatility. Apparently, she's going to do a freestyle rap with Edwin scratching in the background for Friday's show ... can't wait.

After the webcast, the staff met some of LIPA's staff for dinner at Pan-Am at Albert Dock, right down the street from our hotel.

It's just a feeling I get - having been a part of this partnership for really less than a month - that the UArts CPA and LIPA are certainly cut from the same cloth ... from programs to philosophy to personalities ... things just seem to click ... and we laughed and laughed ... i can't remember the last time laughed out loud for that long ... and I have a 2yo daughter (quite a funny little creature) who makes me laugh constantly.

Friday's the big performance ... Dicciani and Arthur Berstein set the show late thursday afternoon ... looks like about a 90 minute show ... should be brilliant!

Oh, and Dicciani's driving has improved 100 percent. I've actually taken to sitting shotgun! We've basically been rehearsing various things with dancers, singers, and an ensemble called "community arts". I've enjoyed the multiple collaborations between the arts; it gives such a warm community of performers, all sharing a similar interest.

I've really learned a lot since i've been here. Things are definately very different. People seem to be generally mellow and laid-back... at least during the day time. At night, there are dozens of bars, clubs, and other other places that many of the students attend. It seems as if most of the students are friendly with one another, and they seem to spend more time together outside school than students in America. Everyone seems to know one another.

Since i've been here, i've found so many little things that are very different than living in America. On my first day here, me and two friends went to a small restaurant to order a burger. First of all, the accents were so strong that I had a lot of trouble understanding what the man was saying. Instead of asking me if I wanted lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on my burger, they asked if I wanted "salad". He asked if I wanted sauce on the burger or on the side, and he was talking about Ketchup. They call French Fries chips, and they call potato chips crisps. Here's a faculty note!

Greetings, all! Liverpool is grand - except for the weather...

The flight over was smooth, although I didn't actually sleep (hooray for narrow seating!). We arrived at LIPA shortly after 11 a.m., and I did a vocal improvisation clinic at 1 p.m. - excellent! Fortunately, I caught a second wind of adrenaline and their students were a blast to work with, so it was very fun. The only downside is that by last night I was vocally shot - and my voice was no great shakes today (I've been spending the last week trying to stave off a cold, and I think my efforts have finally failed). Thankfully, it's been improving, so I am only thinking positive thoughts about tomorrow (as well as drinking water by the gallon).

Some good things were happening today - I took Kyle, Jeanette, and Nicole to a rehearsal of one of their non-major voice classes. The instructors have a cool approach towards teaching these students in a group setting (one that I plan on sharing with the UArts faculty who teach non-major voice), and then we collaborated with the bucket drummers to "build" a piece covering a wide variety of textures, harmonies, and rhythms being brought in and out and interacting back and forth. We also got together to work on vocals for a Mingus tune with some of their voice majors (most of whom were in the Tuesday clinic). It's been a crazy (but very fun) day and a half.

What is rewarding from the faculty standpoint is seeing just how into this whole process our students are. There is no sense of "competition" - it's truly a collaborative experience, with everyone bringing different things to the table. This was never more apparent than during the UArts Webradio broadcast this afternoon, when our dancers brought over several of their LIPA counterparts for their interview segment. Just watching, you could tell that the students are enjoying hanging out together, and that they are sharing with and learning from each other. And it's not just the students - the exchanges between faculty have been great as well. I know I've got some new ideas for teaching in the private studio, and I know I've given some of the voice faculty here some new ideas as well.

Now if my throat can just get back into shape... More to come later.

Justin Binek

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uarts-lipa.blogspot.com/2006/03/students-are-having-all-fun-heres.html' title='The students are having all the fun... I'm pretty sure it went as well as it could, but only the listeners can say. I have not yet collaborated with their radio station but i will be sure to in the following days. The broadcast had some problems before it even started due to the weak WIFI at LIPA. I can't blame them though, they're not a technical school. I've never been to a school that's JUST performing arts - they're not that tech oriented and who can blame them? But i found a sweetspot in the bar and with a pint of Cains in my hand spoke to Philly from across the pond. Of course, this laptop can't use FETCH outside of UArts, much less from another continent so i had to try and use FTP.EXE on a PC here, but am unable to select RUN from the start menu because of our guest access. It was all a bit frustrating but to make a long story short, I was able to ftp the ref movie for the broadcast. Everything is different (which is to be expected) yet its the little things that can throw someone off (the @ simple is in a different space all together on the keyboard...). Let's run down what happened yesterday.

At roughly 3pm we (Mike C, Edwin, Andrea,Kevin and Dan) left the steps of Hamilton Hall to go to WMGK to go on the air and talk about our trip here to Liverpool. The guy, Andre is a Beatles fananatic who has been playing the top 25 albums of all time, and that day he was playing number 20-"Rubber Soul". Off of the album he played a tune that I'll be singing at the Beatles Tribute concert in a couple weeks.

We left the radio station and got back in the schools escort van-Which was no where near as big as we needed to fit all our stuff. Along with the fact that the driver and the rest of us were not getting along very well. Anywhoo...it was fun.

The flight was long and tiresome. I didn't sleep too much, but I did get a chance to watch "Walk the Line". We arrived in Manchester at around 845 am their time, which would be I think 2am Philly time. Ugh. We get on the bus provided for us, which was nice, listened to some pop music from the80's, 90's and now-and here the Spice Girls! Awesome!

Anyway. We got to the school around 11 i think and just sat around for a while. Then me, Kyle and Nicole, the other vocalists went to help Justin Binek out on a clinic. I wasn't really up for singing, but I did anyway.

After meeting up with my host, I took a nap and then got up around 7pm to go to the open mic at the school BAR! Yes I said it the school bar. Got there around 8pm, the jam didn't start till 9pm. Had a few beers and chilled. Ross and I decided that we were going to be the "reps" from the US and perform at Open Mic.

We did 'Use Me' the bill Withers tune and Ross did a song. It was awesome. Then a bunch of us went to a local bar-pub, and chilled with some of the kids from LIPA who were at the open mic. Got some great fast food from Gemini Fast Food after we left the bar. Then went home and went to bed.

Got up at 8 this morning feeling pretty good and showered and got ready for a day of classes i guess. At around 9 I made my way over to LIPA which is only a few blocks away from where I'm staying and met up with everyone. The Vocalists were almost imeddiatly sent off to class. Helped Justin out with a vocal elective class, and then we went downstairs and worked on what we were doing with the large percussion ensemble, made up of buckets, aluminum trash cans, and carnival drums and had almost a massive jam. Wonderful!

Me, Nicole, JP,J.Choung,Mike Mahoney,Charlie, Rob,and Paul went out with one of the guys' host, Faith to this nice lil restaurant/bar called Korova, got some lunch and then headed back here.

Overall its been wonderful to just be in a different environment and with different people and influences. There are differences in the way the two schools work and function, but the main purpose is the same, to just have fun doing what you love to do in the Arts. The weather-hasn't been as nice to us though. I'm excited to get a chance to go out and see some of the famous spots here in Liverpool and just soak up the culture and chill.

Jeanette (UArts)

Another awesome day in the sun?

Hello from Liverpool!!! We finally got here. Let's just say first of all that this place freakin' rocks. The people are so nice with great hospitality.

Tuesday night was just awesome all around. Alot of us hung out in the LIPA pub...yes thats right...a bar on the first floor of the school. There was an open-mic jam session till the pub closed at 11. Afterwards, Jeanette and I went with some LIPA students to experience some Liverpool night life.

Today we met at LIPA at around 9am and the 3 vocalists(Jeanette, Nicole, and myself) worked with an elective singing class. It was fun watching "non-voice majors" singing. We then all met up with the bucket drummers and put some of our work together. There is an very positive vibe here that really makes a person feel comfortable.

Im off this thing for now and I hope everyone in Philly is having fun because we are definitely having on here.

Kyle Collier

Day 1

We're wrapping up our first day at LIPA. What a great place! Weather is cold and rainy, but we knew that coming in ... The students, faculty and staff are all "brilliant" as they say ...

We arrived at the airport, made it through customs and onto our awaiting bus by about 9:30 ...

Once we reached LIPA, our students met thier flatmates and from the look of things, they all hit it off, talking about lots of things: how we do things vs. how they do things; what Liverpool is like vs. Philadelphia.

UArts School of Music faculty member Justin Binek was on deck for a 1 p.m. voice clinic after not having slept the entire flight. But he rose to the occasion, putting on a great clinic on improvisation.

Our dancers attended a 3 p.m. workshop and man, were they movin' ... a real mix of contemporary and hip-hop with a little ballet thrown in for good measure.

There are sections of Liverpool that remind me so much of Philadelphia it's scary. There are sections of town that look just like Olde City ... sections that look like Fairmount ... sections that look like Manayunk. The waterfront, where the UArts staff is staying reminds me of the waterfront in Boston, especially with all of the construction.

Tomorrow, Dicciani (who by the way, should not be allowed behind the wheel over here ;-) ) is hosting a couple of drum workshops. Our singers and musicians are jamming tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. ... bucket drums, raggae songs ... it's gonna rock! more tomorrow ... sleep at last.

Kevin Kaufman (UArts)

Morning of the trip

Hey Kids,

It's Monday morning, a matter of hours before we take off, and I'm packing. I am absolutely positive that I am the only one who's waited until this last minute to do so. Absolutely positive. Anyway, I am extremely excited about the upcoming week, and I just wanted to wish everyone a good trip. Here's to hoping someone doesn't get sat next to a corpulent traveler with excessively nasty body odor and a flock of seagulls haircut. 'Cos that would be no good. Really.
